Varaždin City Museum, Varaždin

Varaždin City Museum, Varaždin website

The Archaeological Department of the Museum of the City of Varaždin was founded in the first half of the 20th century. The museum currently stores seven ancient Egyptian artifacts, six of them were once part of the smaller Egyptian collection of the noble Pasthory–Varady family, and one scarab which came to the museum after 2007. The Pasthory–Varady collection was probably amassed during the 19th century when one of the family members stayed in Egypt during his diplomatic service. After his return to the country, the artifacts were kept in the Križovljan castle, and later were moved to the Museum. The time when these artifacts arrived to the Museum cannot be determined with certainty, although it can be assumed that this took place in the first half of the 19th century. A predynastic cup from the Badari culture is the oldest Egyptian artifact stored in any Croatian institution, which makes this collection very valuable.
